Following our #ToughTimesTogether efforts to provide 2 years of free broadband Internet for 10,000 families under financial hardship, HKBN introduces "Donate Your Own Device for Students", a programme that leverages our customers and business partners network to connect donated notebooks and tablets with disadvantaged students.

With demand for online learning on the rise as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, many disadvantaged students have been left behind due to their lack of access to computer equipment. In view of this, we've partnered with the independent operated HKBN Talent CSI Fund to collect donated notebooks and tablets from HKBN customers and business partners. With a goal to help the community in an environmentally friendly way, refurbishment work will be handled by Caritas Computer Workshop, with associated costs covered by HKBN Talent CSI Fund.

1. Is there a cut-off date for donations?

The Programme will accept devices donations from now until 31 August 2020.

2. Can anyone donate their devices through this Programme?

This donation Programme is only open to customers of HKBN residential services, HKBN Enterprise Solutions, HKBN JOS, and business partners of HKBN Group.

3. Are there any restrictions on models, brands and specifications sought for donation?

Only notebooks and tablets are currently being accepted. The device must be operational with negligible physical damage. For notebooks, the central processor unit and flash memory should have at least Intel® Core™ i3 and 4GB DDR3 respectively. For tablets, we have no specific requirement on model, brand or specification. Should you have any additional questions about requirements, please contact Caritas Computer Workshop at 2716 6875.

4. How can I check the specifications of the computer?

Turn on the computer, click "Control Panel" and then check the contents of "System"; or right-click on the Windows Start menu and select "System" to check the specifications. Should you have any questions regarding specifications, please contact Caritas Computer Workshop at 2716 6875.

5. I want to donate my device, how can I participate in this Programme?

You can first check whether your notebook or tablet meets our requirements for donation. If it does, simply complete the donation form from the Programme's webpage www.hkbn.net/ComputerDonation. Shortly afterwards, we will contact you to confirm details for device collection.

6. Will I be charged a fee for device collection? Who will be handling this?

Collection of donated devices is free of charge. HKBN or Caritas Computer Workshop will assign personnel to pickup and transport the device(s) from your address to Caritas Computer Workshop for refurbishment:

• For 1 to 2 computers: HKBN will handle the pickup;

• For 3 or more computers: Caritas Computer Workshop will handle the pickup with its own fleet of vehicles.

7. Can I donate more than one computer?

Yes, you can donate as many devices as you want.

8. How will you handle my device after pickup from my address?

All devices collected under the Programme will be sent to Caritas Computer Workshop for checking, formatting and refurbishment. All related costs incurred will be covered by HKBN Talent CSI Fund. Once refurbished, the device will be delivered to the Programme's beneficiaries (priority will be given to student families benefitting from HKBN's #ToughTimesTogether – "Free Broadband for The Disadvantaged" programme. If the donated device cannot be refurbished successfully, Caritas Computer Workshop will dismantle the device and examine the components, which will then be sent to qualified recyclers for recycling. Any profits made from selling the components will be used for charity purposes by Caritas Computer Workshop. The relevant proceeds are unrelated to HKBN and HKBN Talent CSI Fund.

9. How long after submitting the donation form would it take for someone to contact me to arrange for device collection?

In general, depending on the number of devices you donate, HKBN (1 to 2 devices) or Caritas Computer Workshop (3 or more devices) will contact you within 7 working days to confirm the collection arrangement.

10. If my address is in a remote area, will you still handle the collection?

That depends. Whether the collection appointment can be arranged or if some extra time is required, such cases will depend on the actual circumstances. HKBN or Caritas Computer Workshop will contact you for confirmation.

11. Can I change my donation appointment date after it has been confirmed?

If you need to change the address or the scheduled appointment time, please call HKBN (for donations involving 1 to 2 devices) or Caritas Computer Workshop (for donations of 3 or more devices) at least three working days before the appointment date. The appointment can only be changed once. In case of Black Rainstorm Signal or Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 or above, the collection service will be suspended, and HKBN or Caritas Computer Workshop will contact you for further arrangements.

12. Do I need to donate the accessories together with the device?

Yes, please make sure that the transformer, charger and power cable that came with your device are included.

13. Can I ask the collection personnel to remove the power cable for me?

Upon collection, donors should ensure that all donated devices have had all cables and connections disconnected, and are placed separately for easy transport.

14. Do I need to remove any personal data from the donated computer and unlock all settings?

Before donating a device, please delete all data stored and unlock all control features. Donors are responsible for completing the following procedures:

(a) back up or transfer all data in any storage device such as computer hard disk and memory;

(b) delete all data in any storage device such as computer hard disk and memory; and

(c) remove all removable media such as computer memory cards, disks, CDs or PC cards. HKBN and Caritas Computer Workshop, under any circumstance, will not be liable for any data that has not been removed from the device, and for any loss of confidential data or software.

15. My data is still stored on the device I donated. What will happen to it after collection? Will the computer hard drive be formatted?

Caritas Computer Workshop will format the hard disk using a programme written in compliance with the US Department of Defense 5220.22-M replication standard for wiping data, which can completely destroy sensitive data and make the data irreparable. The above formatting method will not destroy or damage the hard disk itself, so the formatted hard disk will be reinstalled for reuse by the Programme's beneficiaries.

16. Can I get the device back after donating?

Once the donated device is collected, we will not rescind the donation or return the device and/or any data or information contained in it.

17. Will I get any proof of donation?

Yes. The collection personnel will note the number of devices that have been collected and provide you with a dual signed receipt copy for your records.

18. How will the refurbished devices be delivered to disadvantaged students?

All refurbished devices will first be distributed to families with students who are also benefitting from HKBN's #ToughTimesTogether – Free Broadband for The Disadvantaged programme. Any remaining devices will be distributed to disadvantaged students based on eligibility assessed by the programme's partner organisations (applications are not open to the general public).
